Multiple Stations Work - SaskPower

Date of completion: In-progress, expected completion 2023

Location: Various stations including Assiniboia, Auburton, Bankend, Boundary Dam, Elstow, Ermine, Hawarden, Meadow Lake, Pasqua, Prince Alberta, Regina South, Rush Lake, Swift Current, Tantallon, Timber Cove, and Weyburn

Scope: Decommissioning, salvage, construction and commissioning of 72kV, 138kV, and 230kV stations

Substation Maintenance & Installation of Overhead/Underground Distribution Systems

Date of completion: 2022

Location: Bethune, SK

Customer: KCPS Potash Canada

Scope: 230KV substation maintenance; and  installation/commissioning of 25KV underground and overhead distribution systems. General MV & LV electrical construction & commissioning activities – 25KV GIS switchgear, MCC’s, power transformers, station transformers, modular electrical building, ground grids, protection, cable tray, duct and control panels, LV cables, comm and fiber cables.

Pesakastew Solar Farm

Date of completion: 2022

Location: Near Weyburn, Saskatchewan

Customer: Natural Forces

Scope:

WRETLP is responsible for the EPC of substation and collection system – 25kV (all electrical and interconnection for 10MW solar farm). Electtrical works for the Pesakastew Solar project includes the following supply and installation of:

  • DC Combiner boxies; Solar String Wiring
  • DC Combiner Trunk Cabling; MV Switchgear
  • AC Medium Voltage Cabling; Control Building
  • Point of Common Coupling Equipment
  • Ground Grid, as well as the installation of Inverter Skids

Station Structures & Apparatus Installation

Date of completion: 2022

Location: Various Stations including Weyburn, Regina South, and Boundary Dam

Customer: SaskPower

Scope: Installation of 138/25kV substation structures and apparatus. Installation and commissioning of 138kV CT’s, 138kV vertical break motor operated switch (LM) with ground switch, power and control cables, and one 25kV recloser with arrestors – along with corresponding electrical work. 

Work also included supply, fabrication, bench testing and commissioning of Protection & Control systems. Transformer protection, bus protection (multiple zones), new recloser protection, anti-islanding scheme (AIS) and distance to fault (DTF) protection and comm verification.

While this project was going on, WRETLP also looked after all the LV cabling and all MV Construction & Commissioning Activities at 10MW Solar Pesakastew that interconnects with SaskPower’s Weyburn Substation. 

Riverhurst Wind Farm

Date of completion: 2022

Location: Riverhurst, SK

Customer: Capstone

Scope:

Riverhurst Wind Farm project is the EPC of a 10MW renewable generating facility – consisting of a 25kV underground collection system, and a 25kV wind project collector switching station that facilitates SaskPower’s transmission interconnection. Construction of project includes the installation of a total of three (3) Enercon 3.5MW wind turbine generators.

WRETLP was responsible for the following scopes:

  • Design build of substation. Includes: Civil works, fence , piles, MV cables, control cables, ground grid and fiber installation
  • Design build of (1) 25KV Distribution Skid and setup for plug and play at site
  • Installation of all substation structures and apparatus
  • Installation of collector MV Cables, Terminations & Fiber Cables
  • Commissioning activities and interconnect back to SaskPower

Weyburn FNPA PV 10MW Interconnection

Date of completion: 2022

Location: Weyburn, SK

Customer: SaskPower

Scope: WRETLP has completed brownfield 138kV station build electrical work comprising of the installation of 138/25kV substation apparatus, commissioning of new 138kV NGT, installation of new 138kV vertical break motor operated switch and grounding switch, 138kV bus connection to the existing bus, above grade ducting and grounding, and bonding connections to the new apparatus. A new 25kV recloser was installed at the existing spare which included installation of new recloser switch, recloser, and recloser lightning arrestors. Protection panels and relays were upgrades to provide NGT transformer protection, upgraded bus protection, new recloser protection, and anti-islanding scheme protection.

Similar work was conducted at Pesakestew Solar farm, Regina South station, and Boundary Dam station in conjunction as part of this project.

Swift Current, Assiniboia, Tantallon Station Work

Date of completion: 2022

Location: Various locations in Saskatchewan

Customer: SaskPower

Scope: WRETLP has completed relay replacements work at 3 substation sites: Swift Current, Assiniboia, and Tantallon. Work comprises of:

  • Station Electrical Work – complete installation of all apparatus, apparatus wiring, grounding, ducting/conduit, installation of flex bus, steel fabrication and structure modification and testing.
  • Relay Replacement Work – panel installation and wiring, site wiring, commissioning and test for the replacement of reactor relays and existing sync functions with IEDs.
  • Distance to Fault – testing and commissioning of the distance to fault.

EB Campbell Cap and Pin Insulator Replacements

Date of completion: 2022

Location: Nipawin, SK

Customer: SaskPower

Scope: WRETLP was responsible to complete replacement and installation of 84 insulators on 14 switches. This work included switch maintenance and commissioning for each switch. The work consisted of, but not limited to removal of original cap and pin insulators at the switches; replace the insulators on a switch with LAPP 230kV insulators; perform switch maintenance; check alignment and commission switch. Once completed, needed to complete site testing and commissioning.

SaskPower Multiple Substation Upgrades & Commissioning

Date of completion: 2021

Location: Bromhead, Coleville, Weyburn, Halbrite, Boundary, Kindersley, Marengo, and Ermine

Customer: SaskPower

Scope:

Installation of 138/25kV substation structures and apparatus. Installation & commissioning of 138KV CT’s, 138kV vertical break motor operated switch (LM) with ground switch, bus pipe, risers, grounding, above and below ground duct, power and control cable and one 25KV Recloser with arrestors. Non-electrical commissioning of NGT and protection.

Work also included supply, fabrication, bench testing and commissioning of Protection & Control systems. Transformer protection, bus protection (multiple zones), new recloser protection, anti-islanding scheme (AIS) and distance to fault (DTF) protection and comm verification.

Substation Sync Packages

Date of completion: 2022

Location: Popular River and Prince Albert, SK

Customer: SaskPower

Scope: WRETLP has been contracted to complete panel fabrication, installation testing and commissioning services for sync functions at 2 substations.

Rushlake Creek TRU PAC Replacement

Date of completion: 2021

Location: Rushlake Creek, SK

Customer: SaskPower

Scope: WRETLP completed brownfield 138kV and 230kV station build electrical work which required site panel fabrication, field pulling and wiring, and testing and commissioning. Specifically, the scope of work consisted of: replacing GE D20ME RTU and Schneider Modicon Quantum local control systems with a GE G500 RTU; replaced GE D400 RTU that was installed for the Golden South wind generation project with a GE G500 RTU; and RIOs being installed/replaced at the local control system.

Ground Grid Impedance Testing and Soil Resistivity Testing

Date of completion: 2021

Location: Various stations in Saskatchewan

Customer: SaskPower

Scope: WRETLP performed Ground Grid Impedance Testing and Soil Resistivity Testing at various SaskPower’s Substations and Switching Stations throughout Saskatchewan during the 2021 maintenance season.

Cantuar Regulator Station Grounding and Crushed Rock Upgrades

Date of completion: 2021

Location: Swift Current, SK

Customer: SaskPower

Scope: WRETLP was responsible for the upgrades to below ground grid conductor and rods, above grade bonding to fence and structures/apparatus, adding signs to the station fence, adding crushed rock to the whole site and completing ground grid impedance testing.

Golden South Wind Farm EPC

Date of completion: 2020

Location: Near Assiniboia, Saskatchewan

Customer: Potentia Renewables

Scope:

Golden South is a 200MW wind energy facility and includes a total of 50 Goldwind 4.2MW wind turbine generators. Project includes a 34.5kV collection system and a 230kV collector substation with an interconnection to SaskPower’s electrical grid.

WRETLP was responsible for the full-EPC construction of the 240/34.5kV substation that consisted of:

  • Self-performed civil, mechanical, and electrical construction for 230KV substation and 35KV GIS Electrical Service Building.
  • Assembly, process, vacuum fill and commissioning of (2) 150MVA Transformers
  • Self performed of all MV/HV Pfister Termination Installation & Testing
  • Self performed all commissioning activities and interconnect back to SaskPower

NGT Construction and Commissioning

Date of completion: 2020

Location: Bromhead and Coleville, SK

Customer: SaskPower

Scope: WRETLP conducted construction and commissioning work at 8 stations related to Bromhead and Coleville sites to complete installation of above-grade ducting, above-grade grounding, apparatus install, bus install, site panel installation and wiring, field terminations and commissioning.

Mosaic Belle Plaine CL39 REDA Electrical Install

SaskPower Lloydminster Station Expansion (LY15 Line Position)

Date of completion: November, 2019

Scope:

  • Demolish/Salvage existing structures and bus under outage.
  • Installation of steel structures and associated above ground ducts.
  • Installation of 138KV apparatus.
  • Installation of rigid and flexible bus to apparatus.
  • Panel Fabrication of protection relay panels and CT junction box.
  • Installation of all associated field cabling, inter panel wiring, panel modifications, terminations and labeling.
  • Completion of grounding and bonding connections (above ground) from the existing grid tails to new apparatus, structures and ground px forms.
  • Installation of apparatus inter-pole wiring.
  • Perform stand-alone apparatus testing.
  • Assist with commissioning with wiring changes as identified.

Enbridge L3 Pipeline Expansion - Craik
